How does an integrative wellness session work?  What are the benefits?

At TTN Therapeutics integrative wellness sessions are specifically oriented to support survivors of trauma and/or abuse; especially those who are coping with depression, anxiety and/or elevated stress levels, as well as the chronic physical pain often associated with these states of being.  Sessions are crafted to meet the individual goals of the client and may include several forms of massage therapy, bodywork, energy therapies and aromatherapy.

Affective Massage Therapy is a recently suggested name for a subfield of Massage Therapy.  The name is based on research results indicating Massage therapy's "strong and consistent effects on anxiety and depression", according to Christopher A. Moyer, PhD, Research Section Editor, IJTMB, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin.  Moyer proffered the name in a Research Section Editorial entitled “Affective Massage Therapy” published in Vol. 1, No. 2 of the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork in December 2008.

Research study findings support the effectiveness of massage therapy, aromatherapy, and other forms of bodywork and energy therapies in easing the symptoms of depression and anxiety.  Sessions like these, used in conjunction with psychotherapy or counseling, are an especially powerful support for people seeking resilient responses to the life altering impact of trauma and/or abuse.  (massage therapy research 1, 2, 3 - aromatherapy research 1, 2, 3)

The techniques I practice cover a broad range of options.  They include touch therapies where the client is disrobed, touch therapies where the client is clothed, energy therapies including touch where the client is clothed, and energy therapies which don’t require touch where the client remains clothed.  Clients for whom reclining on a table is uncomfortable can receive a session while seated.  I incorporate guided visualizations, breathing, and gentle, respectful prompts to encourage a calm sense of presence and body awareness into most sessions.

Sessions may be progressive over time, moving from an initial experience which may involve minimal physical contact and working towards a more traditionally disrobed full-body massage.  The goal is always to create a safe experience of appropriate, nurturing touch, and this is done through intentionally co-creating with clients the form each session takes.

"I work extensively with people experiencing anxiety, many of whom are trauma survivors, and use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help clients process held emotional pain. Collaborating with Tracie – who can offer clients regular bodywork and energy healing support during counseling work with EMDR – has repeatedly proven to facilitate the process and help people move more fully out of pain and into a place of compassion and self-love."

"I approach each client session clearly aware that the impact of trauma on individual lives is unique and complex.  I am able to draw on a wide range of body and energy therapy modalities to craft a session “in the moment” which meets clients where they are in their process, and honors their boundaries and expressed goals.  I also firmly believe in working collaboratively with you, the counselor or therapist, when the client has given permission for us to do so."

~Tracie Nichols, MA, IAC, NCTMB

"Tracie provides a safe and supportive healing environment that allows people previously uncomfortable with the idea of hands-on therapeutic work to receive essential nourishment. As a counseling professional who works collaboratively with Tracie, I have witnessed the transformative impact of her work in clients’ lives – both in her ability to support them as they engage in deep therapeutic work and in her ability to help them access their essential resources through imagery and a felt sense of being embodied."
