What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the skilled use of pure, therapeutic grade, essential oils and hydrosols for increased health, harmony, and well-being of the whole person, the environment and the community.  I practice aromatherapy with profound respect for the potency of the plant essences being used.

What are essential oils and hydrosols?

Essential oils are the non-oily liquid extracts of aromatic plants.  They are produced from all parts of plants, depending on the oil being extracted, including the flowers, twigs, bark, roots and leaves.  In the plants they serve a variety of important purposes.  Among them, attracting beneficial insects (for pollination) and defending against harmful microorganisms.  Is it surprising, then, that many essential oils are known for their ability to be useful in supporting the immune system as it fights harmful microorganisms that humans encounter?

Hydrosols/hydrolats are aromatic waters produced by steam distilling plant material. Like essential oils they are produced from all parts of plants and are co-products of essential oils produced by steam distillation, although some plants, like comfrey, are distilled specifically for their hydrosol/hydrolat and produce no measurable essential oil.  Hydrosols/hydrolats are a soft, gentle approach to supporting wellness, while remaining wonderfully effective.  They have a much briefer shelf life than essential oils, and must be kept refridgerated if they are unpreserved.

Benefits of using Aromatherapy

While there are properties that are said to be specific to individual essential oils (like tea tree for respiratory infections or peppermint for headaches), everyone responds to experiencing essential oils and aromatherapy in a very individual way...and that's one of the greatest beauties of this modality.  The sense of smell is one of the most powerful ways to evoke memories and emotional responses in people.  Just think about encountering a scent from your childhood and how powerfully that scent places you back into the past moment with every sense intact.  The chemical constituents of essential oils create many of their effects on the physical body, and even the mental/emotional bodies.  But it's the unknown and subtle responses to scent that make each essential oil a unique experience for every person who encounters them. Beyond that, each essential oil generates its own electrical frequency on the physical level, and vibrational frequency on the more than physical level.  The possibilities for precipitating and supporting transformation are many and intriguing....

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of the best-known essential oils.  Lavender essential oil is reported to be useful in easing depression as well as headaches, muscular pain and insomnia.  Its subtle properties are expressed beautifully by Valerie Worwood in her book The Fragrant Heavens (now published as Aromatherapy for the Soul).  "Lavender embodies the warm, protective love of Mother Earth.  It is caring, cherishing, and nurturing, and energetically very active in the auric field, closest to the body, incorporating heavenly energies into the physical with great efficiency."  Lavender hydrosol is especially soothing to the senses and can be very useful for cooling skin irritated by over exposure to sun or wind.
